  1. How can hateful, degrading treatment of any living creature be justified by any religion?

Sometimes religion is contradicting with its message and who it does and does not apply to. Therefore, some actions are justified by religious interpretation because there can be a hierarchy level of the "chosen people"

Why do societies continue with indoctrination that mandates suffering?

Some societies value traditional ways over modern ways. Due to this the society may not realize that their traditional ways are harmful towards certain population demographics compared to the modern ways they could adopt for society.

In what ways do patriarchal societies create such systems of suffering in order to retain their control?

They require the use of land ownership for males, the right to vote for men only, the right to marry has to be verified by the father. Sons have more value than daughters since birth mentality.

What can be done to help the girls and women who are subjected to the widow treatment in India?

Society can better inform individuals that women are humans too and that they do not "die" when their husbands die. This can be done by passing laws, education and social justice movements.

  2. I don't feel that hateful treatment can be justified by religion, but people try to do it anyway. I think people often misinterpret scriptures, holy scripts, etc. without keeping in mind that those customs related to an old time period that is vastly different from today's society.

Societies continue with indoctrination that mandates suffering because they do not want to change. if it's convenient for whoever's at the top of the class system, indoctrination persists.

Patriarchal societies oppress others, or put them in an oppressing condition in which they do not realize how oppressed they are. Therefore, those people never try to move up the socioeconomic rank, because ignorance is bliss. They do not always recognize their own suffering. To them, "that's just the way it is".

To change the widow system in India, people need to band together to make a change. Women have rights outside of their husbands. A powerful voice needs to speak up and make that known.

  3. 1. To some people, their religion is how to live life and to take the old, traditional beliefs and apply it to their lives no matter if it is not how today is. Perhaps some people are 1000% dependent to their religion while others are also, but in a different way or apply it in a way to adapt to modern today. I don’t feel that it is okay to be hateful or degrading to others and justify it religiously, but others tend to anyway.
    2. Societies are still valuing tradition over anything else. These are the ways they were born into, lived with and to continue to live with. Trying a different way is against the norm to a society that continues indoctrination that mandates suffering. Sometimes it is conformity that takes over because conformity always has been with humans since forever. If one person (usually an authority figure) values tradition or follows the scripts and wants to continue that, it is easier for others follow that person’s belief than to be against it.
    3. Sometimes patriarchal societies create such systems just to control others or to show that they are superior, smarter, wiser, richer, and better than others. This creates distress, reject, and discouraging feeling in others that can’t stand for themselves. As they feel that way throughout life, it becomes a norm for them and won’t fight to change it.
    4. Just like what Monica J. said. Togetherness is powerful and can be effective to make a change in society. Women are obviously separate people than men and should be treated like separate people with the same rights as men.

  4. Every religion has their own way of what they believe in. We consider it harsh because it's not part of our culture. In India, they see it as women or girls will be fine on their own since they were already married. The patriarchal probably doesn't have women representing and showing how the women and girls are being treated. Men and women have a very different viewpoint when it comes to things about gender. We see men as protecting, dominant, and strong. We see women as caring, nurturing, and passionate. If we took away some of the stereotypes, women would be able to explore the world more instead of being stuck in one place for the rest of their lives. The only way for the women and girls to get help is if they all agree they shouldn't be placed there just because their husband passed away. They didn't chose for that to happen in their lives.

  5. 1. I don’t believe that hateful treatment can be justified by any religion, although some try to justify it regardless. In some religions they may view their beliefs as being a traditional way to live, in which case they will justify their actions based on this belief. Being extremely focused on certain aspects of a religion that may not apply necessarily to modern life can also cause degrading or hateful treatment of people.
    2. Societies continue with indoctrination that mandates suffering because they aren’t interested in change, and prefer to follow a traditional path.

    3. Patriarchal societies create these systems to demonstrate their control and superiority over others in some cases. When people are placed in an oppressed condition and never experience any other way of living, they aren’t able to recognize that they are suffering and don’t try to change anything because of this.

    4. Society can become better informed of how they are being treated through education, and then using this knowledge together to become a more powerful and recognizable voice that makes the components of this system even more well known.
